Gathered Sycamore

8″ x 10″ oil on linen panel

This was painted in a shady spot on the shore of Alamitos Creek in San Jose. I didn’t paint the creek this time. Instead, I was attracted to the intermingled trunks of this collection of sycamore trees. This piece was done with a palette knife and no paint brushes.

Spanish Bay Beach House

8″ x 10″ (private collection)

I remember the beauty of driving along the 17 Mile Drive in the backseat of my parent’s car. These days, it’s a favorite painting destination. Usually I focus on the rocky shore. This time I took in the view of the bay with the white beach house set amongst dark coastal cypress.

Santa Cruz Art League – Art Exposition

7/17/2024 – 9/15/2024

I am delighted that my painting “Heading Out” was selected to be part of the 93rd Annual Statewide California Landscape Exhibit. It is particularly meaningful to me as the juror for the show is Calvin Laing. an artist I greatly admire. The show is full of gorgeous landscapes. If you’re in the area do check it out.

The Santa Cruz Art League’s Gallery is located at 526 Broadway in Santa Cruz.

Iconic California – Coastal Arts League Juried Plein Air Show

“Morning Sun Pigeon Point” was painted on a crisp fall morning just south of the lighthouse. “Garrapata Glow” takes in a back lit morning view as painted on the edge of Pacific at Garrapata just south of Carmel.

Beach Walkers

11″ x 14″ oil on linen panel

This view of China Cove in beautiful Point Lobos draws out attention to a couple walking on the beach below. In my take, I’m mesmerized by the green jewel-like colors of the shallow water as the light bounces off of the sand.

Crab Season, Pillar Point

14″ x 18″ oil on linen panel

In Northern California we don’t have snow to signal the arrival of the winter holiday season but we do have Dungeness crab. In this piece, I am celebrating crab season at Half Moon Bay’s Pillar Point Harbor. I love the way the sun as it lowers hits the crab bins along with all the activity as boats head in and out and unload their catch. The boat on the right is the Miss Moriah which I’ve already painted several times.

Plein Air Cavo Kortia

My May visit to Greece was pretty much perfect. For decades, I’ve taken an annual trip with three friends I first got to know when I lived in Colorado. This year we headed to Athens and points beyond.

While I painted in Athens, my favorite spot for plein air painting was along the rocky shore just below the apartment we rented at Cavo Kortia which is near the small town of Kyparissi in the Peloponnese. The piece with the boats was painted while enjoying cocktails with my friends on the terrace of our rented apartment. Then it was off to a wonderful dinner at a terrific open air restaurant on-site. Doesn’t get any better.

View From Kavo Kortia

8″ x 10″ (private collection)

The combination of mountains and sea int he Greek Peloponnese is just gorgeous. I painted this piece of the activity in a small harbor near Kyparissi while enjoying pre-dinner cocktails with friends on the terrace of our rented apartment. What great memories.
