There are lots of beautiful scenes to paint near Pigeon Point Lighthouse and have almost painted this large rock outcrop several times. I did some rambling around to find it’s “good side” and had this go at it.

Usually I think of a plein air painting as finished as I’m packing up my gear to leave. This time, I added the riders later to give the piece more of a sense of a story and to provide additional balance to the composition.

The carousel in Parc Monceau in Paris is an all time favorite. Maybe because it references my childhood literary favorites. The Nautilus Submarine is from Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. The plane from Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry. Regardless it brings a bit of joy to the heart to see children play and at Parc Monceau some of the little girls do so in charming summer dresses.

Spring is such an amazing time of year in the area foothills. In this Plein air painting, I’m appreciating the cool shade of a nearby oak surrounded by late spring greens punctuated a sense of the summer yellows to come.

This painting captures a personal memory. My husband (Mark) and our much loved Dalmatian (Beau) walk gingerly on a rickety footbridge near the Genesee River in Rochester New York. Beau is terrified of heights and Mark has a thing for sound construction.

This view is from above Luffenholtz Beach in Humboldt County with views north toward Trinidad. It’s a beautiful spot and a lot to capture on this small panel.

I was attracted to this scene by the sandstone pillar’s angular puzzle shapes. Then, as the morning sun illuminated the distant bluff at just right angle, I was taken by the the warm green reflections in the water. That moment of morning shimmer persists in my memory even as the bluffs themselves erode and change.

In this piece, I’m particularly noticing the way the light catches the Aspen’s bark along with the shapes formed by color and shadow in the distance.

I painted this plein air piece on a beautiful winter morning that offered a mix of clouds a few raindrops and breakthrough sunshine. I love the way Capitola has retained its own quirky character and hoped to capture some of that in this painting.

This plein air piece was painted downtown Los Gatos. I was drawn to the way some of the leaves shimmered in the mostly shady scene. I also wondered a bit about the person who makes their home above the bakery.
